Class Summary

Located in Texas City, approximately 30 miles south of Houston, College of the Mainland was founded in 1966, and has seen its student enrollment grow from the first class of 414 students to nearly 6,000 today. The main campus offers a wide range of classes for students seeking an associate degree with plans to transfer to a four-year university to robust continuing education courses which provide students with the foundation to join the workforce. In addition, COM holds classes at four learning centers and six partnering high schools. The four learning centers include the COM Learning Center- North County in League City and the COMCosmetology Lab, the Gulf Coast Safety Institute and the COM Learning Center-Gulfway in La Marque. COM is a Hispanic-serving institution and is listed as a top Military Friendly School offering services through the Veterans Success Center.

The Texas City campus is being transformed with the planned construction of three new buildings – STEAM/Allied Health Building, Industrial Careers Building and a Student Success Center – following the overwhelming voter approval of a $162.5 million bond referendum in November 2018.

College of the Mainland is at the forefront in assisting students complete their field of study. Through a corequisite program, underprepared students take a developmental course and the college credit course in the same subject together with tutorial assistance. COM was the first college or university in Texas to fully implement in Fall 2017 and the results are impressive.

Students also are benefitting from a redesign of community college education through Guided Pathways to Success. Through GPS, the college is diligently working to provide students with structured pathways that lead to the successful and timely completion of a degree or certificate. This approach also includes providing students with program maps and wraparound academic and student support services that will result in a smooth transfer to a four-year college or university or the workforce.

As the college continues to see a steady increase in enrollment, the campus remains focused on its three goals: Student Success, Employee Fulfillment and Exemplary Facilities.

The Vice President for Instruction provides executive-level strategic and innovative leadership, exploring and developing new models of inclusive educational programming and sustainable business practices. As chief academic officer, the VPI leads college-wide programs, policies and initiatives to recruit, retain, and support outstanding faculty, and efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion, and innovative approaches to student learning and success.

The VPI leads college-wide Academic Affairs, including a team of discipline-based deans, along with other staff, collaborating closely with campus and college leaders to further the vision of the college. The VPI monitors and ensures good standing with accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, manages the college’s Master Academic Plan and operational needs of Academic Affairs in accordance with policies of the Board of Trustees and with federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience

Candidates will possess a minimum of a doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution and seven years of relevant experience. Five (5) years higher education teaching experience required

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

Community college teaching experience preferred.

Job Duties

development in basic skills, transfer, workforce, and non-credit programs;

• provides guidance to, and receives recommendations from the Faculty Senate and other
representative organizations regarding the planning, implementation and review of academic
programs, services, activities and related matters;

• acts as the officer in the recruitment and selection of faculty, and to recommend to the President the employment of those selected;

• participates in open sessions of the Board of Trustees and in closed sessions as needed;

• prepares, submits, and monitors the annual budget for areas of responsibilities;

• trains, supervises, evaluates, and directs the work of assigned personnel;

• completes other duties as assigned by the President.

Physical Requirements

No or very limited exposure to physical risk. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. Must be willing to travel for college business.
