McMurry University invites applications from and nominations of dynamic and inspiring professionals for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty.


Founded in 1923 as a United Methodist institution, McMurry University is a vibrant and comprehensive center of undergraduate education. The campus is located on 52 acres in Abilene, Texas, a city of more than 122,000. Abilene lies in the geographic center of Texas.

The University offers 45 majors and pre-professional programs in dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, pharmacy, and physical therapy. The University also offers a Master of Science in Nursing in one of two tracks, education or family nurse practitioner and a new Master of Accountancy program. The largest majors are Education (16.3 percent) and Business (17.6 percent) in 2019-20. The student/faculty ratio is 10:1 and 75.6% of classes have fewer than 20 students.

McMurry University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and master's degrees. The University also is accredited by the Texas Education Agency and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. McMurry is a member of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church, the National Collegiate Honors Council, the Council of Independent Colleges, the Association of Governing Boards, and the College Board. McMurry is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution.


The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty (VPAA/DOF) is the chief academic officer of the University, is a member of the President's Cabinet, and acts as the chief officer in the absence of the President. The VPAA/DOF is responsible for oversight and assessment of all academic programs and supports the mission of the university.



  • Faculty credentials in a discipline of study at the University;

  • Earned terminal degree;

  • Academic Administrative experience; and

  • Classroom teaching experience in higher education.

  • Experience with institutional academic budget development and oversight;

  • Experience with faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation and accountability;

  • Experience at Dean's level or comparable;

  • Has been awarded tenure;

  • Shows an understanding of the small private college;

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills;

  • Has experience with SACSCOC accreditation;

  • Has had formal training in academic administration and/or leadership;

  • Has demonstrated skill in enhancing the quality of academic programs and in evaluating program viability;

  • Has a history of developing new academic programs, especially in the on-line/virtual environments;

  • Has a history of successful implementation of difficult decisions;

  • Has shown the ability to raise funds through academic and/or research grants ;

  • Can work effectively with the administrative team; works collegially with faculty; and

  • Demonstrates a commitment to students.
