Founded in 1927, Butler Community College has a 97-year history of outstanding faculty, dedicated administrators and staff, and tremendous community and donor support. Serving more than 9,800 students, Butler has a tradition of excellence both inside and outside the classroom with a focus on student success through innovation, and leadership in higher education. Located in close proximity to Wichita, the largest urban area in Kansas, Butler’s campuses in El Dorado and Andover are within very easy driving distance.
Butler’s Nursing program is highly competitive and recognized across the region for outstanding graduates, its ADN-BSN pathway with Kansas University School of Nursing and partnership with Cowley College. In 2021, Butler was named the 50th Adobe Creative Campus in the nation and only one in Kansas and designated a “National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education” by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. Butler is the only AVID College in Kansas and since 2018 has saved students more than $2.2 M using OER’s in the English courses alone. Butler has a 49-year partnership with McConnell Air Force Base and a 21-year partnership with Emporia State University offering bachelors degrees in Education on Butler’s campuses. Butler is Wichita State University’s #1 transfer institution. In very recent years, Butler has seen a number of innovative changes including a complete redesign of the Math curriculum, implementation of Pathways, addition of hyflex/hybrid classrooms, podcasting studios, and the MyLapTop initiative all with a focus on student support and success. Outstanding vocal music, theatre, and fine arts programs along with multiple national championships in football, softball, track and livestock judging set Butler apart along with nearly $1 M in foundation scholarships awarded annually. Butler is the largest employer in the county with a total direct economic impact in the county of over $46M and a more than $754 M economic impact in its 10-county primary market in south central Kansas.

The Vice President of Academics (VPA) reports directly to the college president and provides innovative leadership for the college and faculty to ensure Butler’s mission is served, strategic goals are met, and the college’s Timeless Institutional Values of “ quality, integrity, caring, and service” are reflected in educational practices.
  • Serves as a member of the executive management team which oversees the College’s strategic planning, resource allocation, financial sustainability, academic excellence expectations, and college operations;
  • Responsible for the administration and oversight of seven academic divisions;
  • Promotes student success individually and institutionally through active involvement in recruitment and retention of students and provides equity-focused leadership through collaborative work with students, staff, and college stakeholders who have diverse educational, economic, cultural and social backgrounds;
  • Facilitates continued innovation in teaching practices and modalities in a shared effort with faculty and staff to best support, educate, and serve all students;
  • Responsible for academic strategic innovation, program development and growth, and academic digital literacy and transformation;
  • Oversees a comprehensive student outcomes assessment program, a vigorous program review process, online learning, and curriculum development;
  • Oversees Butler’s highly successful Early College Academies, a robust faculty development program, Pathways, library services, industry relevant career/technical education advancement, online offerings;
  • Develops and supports dynamic business and industry partnerships in service to our communities;
  • Manages annual budget development and financial oversight for academic departments;
  • Directly involved with annual professional employee contract negotiations.

Qualified candidates will have a masters’ degree from an accredited institution with a doctoral degree preferred, a minimum of five years’ progressive and successful administrative experience in higher education, and three to five years of full time higher education teaching experience. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to the community college mission and comprehensive knowledge of pedagogy and best practices at the community college level. Additionally, proven strategic planning experience, comprehensive budget development and management experience, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Chosen as one of the Higher Learning Commission’s “Open Pathways” pilot colleges, Butler maintains an outstanding accreditation history with a reaffirmation of 10-year accreditation following the spring 2023 site team visit. Since 2010, Butler has been the only Kansas community college with a defined and highly successful Early College Academy with more than 600 high school juniors and seniors completing their associate degree at the same time they earn their high school diploma.

Qualifications

Required experience
A. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible and successful administrative experience at the post secondary level.
B. Three to five years of full time equivalent college level teaching experience.
C. Strategic planning experience.
D. Comprehensive budget development and management experience.

Required educational background
Master’s degree in a relevant discipline; Doctorate preferred.
