The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami in Miami, FL, invites applicants for a salaried postdoctoral Associate position. We seek an individual to join the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division (OCED) supporting water quality nutrient laboratory analyses at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, FL.

This position will be responsible for the nutrient-related chemical oceanography needs of the division, including mixing reagents, creating standards, maintaining laboratory chemicals, records and equipment, ordering needed materials and entering and QA/QCing data. They will analyze nutrient samples taken at sea during oceanographic research cruises and small boat sampling efforts returned to the laboratory as well as samples taken in laboratory experiments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading all aspects of nutrient lab analysis and statistical analyses of field samples from OCED field surveys and lab experiments, as well as coordinate all laboratory logistics
  • Analyzing Dissolved Inorganic Nutrient samples on a gas segmented flow autoanalyzer, including but not limited to (NO2, NO3, Si, PO4, NH4, TKN, TDP/TP);
  • Developing a comprehensive nutrient research program with multiple projects and PIs at AOML including statistical analyses of samples;
  • Laboratory management and safety maintenance;
  • Processing and database entry, and management of nutrient analyses, while coordinating with ancillary water quality observations like chlorophyll-a and microbial analyses from water samples as needed
  • Collaborating on various ecological studies, including water quality, benthic habitat monitoring, and juvenile fish community assessments;
  • This work may be done in hot temperatures, sometimes adverse weather conditions and at sea on small boats and large research vessels;
  • Assist the group in other laboratory sample analyses and data entry, data QA/QC, and coordinate database management as well as computational and statistical analysis when required;
  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific publications; and Seek intra- and extramural research funding.

Requirements:

Candidates for this position should have a PhD degree in Marine Biology/Ecology, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Marine or Environmental Science, Oceanography, or a related field experience. Candidates should have demonstrable experience with 1) fieldwork in Biscayne Bay (or similar region) and their environmental characterization; 2) ocean chemistry laboratory work or related lab work; 3) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team, including during overnight research vessel surveys and fieldwork trips away from Miami for up to 12 days at a time; and (4) excellent independent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, good organizational skills, meticulous laboratory methods. Such work requires a degree of physical mobility and places certain stresses on the incumbent. He/she must be able to lift and move items of up to 50 lbs.

 

The position will be located at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division in Miami, FL.
