Position Title: Vice-President and Dean of Student Affairs
Reports To: The President
Terms of Employment: Twelve months
Salary Range: FLSA Classification: Exempt
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIES:
The Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs is responsible for fostering a commitment to student success by actively developing, implementing, and maintaining programs and services that enrich student learning, build and maintain a strong sense of community, and support the social and personal development of students at Paine College.
The Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs provides innovative vision and strategies to support an optimal student experience and has leadership and oversight of the departments and programs of the Student Affairs division including: Student Conduct, Career Services, Health Services, Student Activities, Counseling, and Residence Life. This position reports directly to the President.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
1. Plan, organize, and administer a comprehensive program of student services, activities, and development.
2. Direct the activities of the offices of Student Government and Student Activities, Counseling and Testing; and recommend to the President policy formulations in these areas.
3. Supervise an effective program of Career Services, guidance and counseling.
4. Lead in the development of an effective living-learning environment in the College residence halls and supervise the implementation of the program.
5. Prepare a Code of Conduct governing the rights, responsibilities, and discipline of students at the institution and present the same to the Executive Council for review and approval on an annual basis.
6. Be responsible for administering the regulations regarding student conduct adopted by the College; provide regular reports to the faculty concerning student conduct; and develop and implement more effective ways to achieve high standards of student conduct.
7. Revise annually and make available to each student a Student Handbook, containing the rules and regulations concerning student life on the campus that have been adopted by the faculty and approved by the President and Board of Trustees, as necessary.
9. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Student Life and Welfare Committee of the Board of Trustees.
10. Prepare and submit to the President for approval the budgets concerning Student Affairs and supervise the administration of the approved budgets.
11. Recommend to the President the appointment and promotion of the members of the Student Affairs staff.
12. Submit to the President reports of the activities of the division of Student Affairs.
13. Work with the Vice President of Academic Affairs to develop local school and community partnerships to create and maintain a student-centered curriculum.
14. Assist in the development of grant proposals to provide unique funding to assigned programs from outside governmental and private agencies.
15. Develop goals and strategies for accomplishing assigned responsibilities; actively participate in College strategic planning processes, develop personal professional development goals.
16. Conduct reviews of all student service programs on a scheduled basis.
17. Participate in the retention efforts of the College.
18. Coordinate emergency response for the Student Affairs area.
19. Serve as a member of the Administrative Council and a member of the Committee on Strategic Planning and Evaluation
20. Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the President.
1. An earned doctorate (ABD may be considered) from a regionally or nationally accredited institution (e.g., the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools [TRACS]), or institutions recognized by the Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation.
2. Appropriate administrative experience.
3. Strong management skills, including a strong financial background
4. The ability to manage or adapt to change, make difficult decisions, encourage conflict resolution, and assure employee and department accountability.
5. The ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English
6. Strong interpersonal skills with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
7. Demonstrated cultural competency, including successful experience working with a diverse group of students.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Professional Development Plan (PDP) and the College's evaluation instrument for faculty/staff.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with professional experience.
