The Learning and Engagement Division (LED) at American Council on Education (ACE) promotes the development of high-quality, innovative practice through a blended learning and engagement model. The work of the division centers on three critical components of higher education’s value proposition for the 21st century: equity-minded leadership, student success, and institutional transformation. LED is committed to transforming postsecondary education by cultivating inclusive communities of college and university executives through affordable and flexible professional learning experiences and fostering ongoing engagement with diverse constituencies.

Reporting to the President, the Senior Vice President, provides leadership for ACE's Learning and Engagement Division (LED) and oversight of its operating budget of approximately $75M and a highly engaged team of 60+ dedicated professionals. They will oversee ACE's comprehensive suite of educational programs and services, including research, professional learning, ACE Engage®, learning evaluation services, internationalization and global engagement. They are also responsible for engagement with ACE’s legacy communities, such as the ACE Women’s Network and Council of Fellows, along with facilitating ongoing relationships with corporate, philanthropic, and other stakeholders. The Senior Vice President will bring innovation and leadership to the development and execution of best-in-class strategies that enhance member and constituent engagement.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provides vision and leadership driving the impact of existing programs and identifies areas for new initiatives to ensure alignment with the rapidly evolving higher education landscape and changing member needs. Determines divisional structure and critical management execution to ensure optimal achievement of Division goals and objectives.
  • Continually monitors existing divisional initiatives, providing executive-level input to guide the direction of new initiatives, and, when necessary, makes management decisions and recommendations regarding viability and alternative approaches to meeting member needs.
  • Coordinates the development of short-term and long-range Division objectives in consultation with other units. Ensures objectives are translated into goals and initiatives that meet our members' needs as identified in the Strategic Framework and the organization's Objectives and Key Results.
  • Responsible for fiscal sustainability of the Division, including programs, projects, and development. Ensures revenue expectations are clearly defined for all Division programs, products, and services.
  • Facilitates collaboration with other ACE divisions to ensure effective partnerships and collaborative working relationships to advance divisional goals and organizational priorities. Maintains close working relationships with Government Relations and Public Affairs as a way of insuring that member learning is linked to public policy matters.
  • Directs and participates in initiatives designed to enhance and maintain the Council's relationships with its membership, other associations, and the general public. Maintains relationships with and serves as a primary liaison among member institutions and their executives to facilitate member engagement and in support of divisional goals. Serves as liaison with various diverse communities, organizations, and foundations to facilitate meaningful partnerships and collaborations.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to support and promote ACE’s entrepreneurial spirit and organizational health. Ensures a supportive and inclusive culture and environment that fosters belonging and continuous learning for divisional staff.
  • Engages in meaningful collaboration with marketing and membership to enhance member outreach and deepen member engagement.
  • Partners with ACE's advancement unit to secure sustainable external support for ACE programs and initiatives.
 

 

Education/Experience/Competency Requirements

  • Earned terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

Preferred Competencies

  • At least ten years of progressive demonstrated success in higher education positions involving critical organizational units' transformation. Executive-level experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience launching new initiatives with an entrepreneurial focus and in collaboration with motivated teams.
  • Experience and expertise in strategic planning and implementation of strategic plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and champion diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
  • Motivational and energized leader with a willingness to work at all levels required to achieve divisional objectives.
  • Demonstrated planning and facilitation skills and ability to think strategically, coupled with the ability to translate goals and ideas into effective implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate responsibilities and goals.
  • Ability to navigate the division through business life cycles with variable qualities as a non-profit, startup, and institution.
  • Strong budget and financial management skills, including strategic budgeting skills, with the ability to prioritize resources and create or enhance revenue streams to support organizational initiatives.
  • A record of attracting, developing, and maintaining excellent and diverse talent.

Working Conditions/Physical Effort

  • Office environment; up to 25% travel anticipated once non-essential business travel resumes.
